Many people around the world use art as a means to deal with stress, trauma and unhappiness – or to just find greater peace and meaning in their lives. If you're curious about what art counselling has to offer, you can begin your journey right here. WHAT IS ART COUNSELLING? Art Counselling combines Art and Counselling and provides a creative healing pathway of exploring and expressing thoughts and emotions, and gives visual insight to a person’s subconscious and behaviors. It integrates the fields of human development, visual arts and the creative process (e.g. drawing, painting, sculpture, poetry and photography) with models of counselling and psycho-social therapy. Art Counseling is a Diagnostic and Treatment Tool that can be applied to a wide variety of neurodevelopmental conditions as well as physical and mental illnesses. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? A skilled art counsellor will utilize a range of different art therapy techniques as a healing pathway, resulting in many therapeutic benefits including: - emotional expression and mood regulation, - self-awareness and creative communication, - wellness and social-emotional development, - identity and self-esteem, managing chronic illness, - problem-solving, emotional healing, - addictions recovery, trauma, anxiety, depression, - sensory regulation and mood regulation for neurodivergents (neurodevelopmental conditions like Autism, ADHD, SPD etc. HOW DOES IT WORK? Art Counselling sessions are dynamic, individualized, and self-paced, designed to meet you exactly where you are. You can choose between: - Online sessions via Zoom (from the comfort of your home) - In-person sessions in Hermanus Here’s what to expect: - There’s no “right” or “wrong” way to create, this is your safe and affirming space for self-expression. - No prior art experience is required. - You’ll need a small “creative zone” at home, a quiet corner where you can work undisturbed for about 60 minutes. - Art Counselling prompts and reflection activities are sent via email before each session. - Sessions last 60 minutes, typically every 2 weeks (or more frequently, depending on your needs). - You’ll need access to the internet and an email address.
