HOW TO APPLY FOR A SAQA CERTIFICATE OF EVALUATION WITH A GED
Has your homeschool learner completed the official GED? They may need to apply to SAQA for an evaluation of this foreign qualification.
A SAQA evaluation verifies a foreign qualification and determines its comparable level on the South African National Qualifications Framework (NQF). It may be required for further study, employment or professional registration in South Africa.
Here is the process:
1️⃣ Download the official GED documents
Sign in to the learner’s GED account and download:
✅ The official GED diploma
✅ The official GED transcript showing all four subjects
A practice-test report, preparation-center certificate or screenshot of the results is not sufficient.
2️⃣ Prepare the supporting documents
✅ ID or passport
✅ Official GED diploma
✅ Official GED transcript
3️⃣ Create a SAQA account
Apply in the GED holder’s own name and use their unique contact details. A parent or legal guardian may assist, particularly if the learner is a minor.
4️⃣ Add the GED qualification
Enter the information exactly as it appears on the GED documents and select the United States of America as the country of origin.
5️⃣ Upload, submit and pay
Upload clear copies of the required documents, pay the current fee shown on the SAQA portal and save your application number and proof of payment.
6️⃣ Monitor the application
Check the learner’s email and the SAQA portal regularly. Respond promptly if SAQA requests additional information or verification.
SAQA advises that evaluation may take approximately three months from the date on which a complete and compliant application is received and registered.
7️⃣ Download the electronic certificate
Once approved, download the electronic SAQA Certificate of Evaluation (eSCoE) from the portal.
⚠️ IMPORTANT
A SAQA evaluation does not convert the GED into a South African NSC. It also does not guarantee admission or automatically grant university matriculation exemption.
Always confirm the admission requirements of the specific university, college, employer or professional body.
